Arches have come back into Indian interiors in a big way. A rounded opening between the living and dining areas, an arched niche behind the sofa or a painted arch behind the TV softens the straight lines of a modern apartment and gives the hall a focal point that photographs well.
They also suit Indian homes historically. Arched doorways and niches are part of older houses across Bangalore and South India, and a well-proportioned arch rarely looks out of place.
Here are arch designs for the hall, the materials used to build them in apartments and houses, and what they cost.
Where an arch works in a hall
An arched opening between the living and dining areas defines the two zones without closing either. It works best where there is already a wall or a partial wall between them.
An arched niche in a wall, with shelves or a light inside, adds depth and display space behind a sofa or beside a TV unit.
An arched entrance to the foyer or a passage frames the view as you enter the home.
A painted arch on a flat wall behind a console, a dining table or a TV unit gives the look of an arch for very little cost and no construction.
An arched mirror, either a single piece or built into a wall panel, reflects light and suits halls with limited daylight.
Arch shapes
A semicircular or Roman arch has a full half-circle top. It is the classic shape and suits most openings.
A segmental arch has a flatter curve, less than a half-circle. It suits wide openings where a full semicircle would be too tall.
A pointed or Gothic arch rises to a point at the top. It gives a dramatic, tall look and suits halls with high ceilings.
A Moorish or keyhole arch narrows slightly before curving, giving a decorative, Mughal-inspired shape. It suits traditional and fusion interiors.
A modern elongated arch, tall and narrow with a gentle curve, suits minimalist interiors and is popular in niches.
A double or scalloped arch uses two or more small curves and suits a decorative, Indo-Western style.
Proportions that look right
The opening should be tall enough to walk through comfortably, at least 7 feet at the lowest point of the curve in a doorway.
A semicircular arch's height above the straight sides is half its width. A 4-foot-wide opening needs 2 feet of curve, so the total height is 9 feet with 7-foot sides. In a 10-foot apartment ceiling that leaves only a narrow band above, which can look cramped. Segmental or elongated arches often suit standard-height apartments better.
Keep arches in a room consistent. One shape repeated, such as an arched opening, an arched niche and an arched mirror, looks planned. Three different arch shapes in one room look accidental.
Materials for building arches
In apartments, arches are usually built from gypsum board on a metal frame, which is light, quick to install and does not touch the structure. Gypsum is fine for openings in non-structural partitions and for niches.
POP over a frame or on an existing wall suits curved details and plus-minus style mouldings around an arch.
Plywood or MDF with veneer, laminate or paint suits arched door frames, wooden arches between rooms and arched panels behind the TV.
In independent houses, arches can be built in brick or concrete as part of the structure. Any opening in a load-bearing wall needs a structural engineer's approval.

Finishing an arch
Paint is the simplest finish. A contrasting colour inside the arch, or a lime plaster texture, makes it stand out.
Wooden cladding on the inner face of an arched opening adds warmth and protects the edges from wear.
A thin LED strip hidden along the inside edge of a niche or opening adds a soft glow at night.
Corner beads and careful finishing on gypsum arches stop the edges chipping when people brush past them.
Arches in small apartments
In a compact 2 BHK, a full arched opening between the living and dining areas can take space a partition does not have to. A painted arch or an arched niche gives the same softness without construction. An arched mirror in the foyer makes a narrow entrance feel wider and brighter.
Repeat the arch in small, inexpensive places to tie the home together: an arched mirror in the bathroom, arched shelves in a child's room or an arched headboard. The shape carries through without building a single new wall.
Arches and Vastu
Many families like arches at doorways and entrances. If you follow Vastu, mention it at the start, as it may affect which openings are arched and how the main entrance is framed.
What an arch costs in Bangalore
In 2026, a gypsum arched opening in an existing partition costs about Rs 12,000 to Rs 35,000 depending on size and finish. A gypsum arched niche with lighting costs about Rs 10,000 to Rs 25,000. A wooden arched frame or panel costs Rs 20,000 to Rs 60,000. A painted arch on a flat wall costs a few thousand rupees.
Changing a straight opening into an arch in a masonry wall, in an independent house, costs more and depends on the structure.
Mistakes to avoid
Making the arch too low is the most common. A curve that starts at 6 feet feels heavy and clips tall family members.
Cutting arches into structural walls without advice is the second. Get an engineer's view before touching any wall that might carry load.
Overusing arches is the third. One or two arches in a hall make a statement. Arches on every opening make the home feel themed.
