In an independent house or a duplex, the staircase is usually the largest single element inside the home. It decides how the floors connect, takes up a big piece of the floor plan and is often the first thing you see from the entrance.
It also has to be safe for everyone in the family, from a toddler to a grandparent, for decades. Steps that are too steep, too shallow or uneven cause most falls on stairs. Getting the dimensions right matters more than the finish.
Here is a guide to staircase design for homes in Bangalore: types, sizes, materials, the space under the stairs and costs.
Staircase types
A dog-leg or U-shaped staircase rises in two flights with a landing between them, turning back on itself. It is the most common staircase in Indian houses because it fits into a compact rectangle and gives a resting point halfway.
An L-shaped or quarter-turn staircase turns 90 degrees at a landing. It suits corners and open-plan living rooms where the stair becomes a feature.
A straight staircase runs in one flight. It is simple to build and easy to use, but it takes a long strip of floor and feels steep without a landing in a tall house.
A spiral staircase winds around a central post. It takes very little floor space and suits terrace access or a secondary stair, but it is hard to carry furniture up and less comfortable for older family members.
A floating or cantilever staircase has steps fixed only at one side into the wall, with nothing below. It looks light and modern but needs careful structural design, usually with steel or concrete anchored into a strong wall.
An open-riser staircase has gaps between the steps instead of vertical boards. It lets light through, but the gaps can be unsafe for small children unless they are kept under 4 inches.
Comfortable step sizes
A comfortable step for a home has a riser, the height of each step, of about 6 to 7 inches (150 to 180 mm), and a tread, the depth you step on, of about 10 to 12 inches (250 to 300 mm).
A useful check is the rule that two risers plus one tread should come to about 24 to 25 inches (600 to 640 mm). Steps outside this range feel either steep or awkwardly long.
Every step in a flight must be the same height. A single step that is half an inch higher or lower than the rest is what makes people trip.
The staircase should be at least 3 feet (about 900 mm) wide. A width of 3.5 to 4 feet is far more comfortable and makes moving furniture possible.
Leave at least 7 feet of headroom above every step, measured from the front edge of the step to the ceiling or beam above.
Add a landing after about 12 to 15 steps, so no single flight is too long.
Finishes for steps
Granite is the most common finish on staircases in Bangalore. It is hard, durable and affordable. Use a flamed or leather-finish granite, or add anti-skid grooves near the front edge, because polished granite is slippery.
Marble looks elegant but is softer and can stain. It suits formal homes with careful maintenance.
Wooden treads on a concrete or steel base give warmth and suit modern homes. Use hardwood or engineered wood with a durable finish.
Vitrified tiles on stairs are affordable but chip at the edges. Use full-body tiles with a bullnose or a metal nosing.
Lighting the staircase
Stairs must be well lit. Step lights, small fittings set into the wall a little above every second or third step, light the treads without glare. A pendant or a wall light at the landing lights the turn.
Place switches at the top and bottom of the stairs, with two-way wiring, so no one has to climb in the dark.
Plan doors, stairs and the facade together.
The space under the stairs
The space under a dog-leg or L-shaped staircase is one of the most useful unused volumes in a house. Common uses include a powder room, a storage cupboard, a shoe cabinet, a study nook, a pooja space, a small bar or a reading corner.
In duplexes, built-in storage under the stairs costs about Rs 40,000 to Rs 90,000, a study nook Rs 60,000 to Rs 1.4 lakh and a powder room Rs 1.2 lakh to Rs 2.5 lakh.
Duplex apartments and existing stairs
In duplex apartments, the staircase structure is usually built by the developer. You can still change the railing, the finish on the steps, the lighting and the space below, which together change how the stair looks.
In older independent houses, a dated staircase can often be refreshed with new cladding on the steps, a modern railing and better lighting, without touching the structure.
Staircases and Vastu
Many families in Bangalore follow Vastu guidance when planning a staircase in a new house. Common preferences are a staircase in the south, west or south-west part of the house, steps that turn clockwise as you climb, and an odd number of steps in each flight. If these matter to you, tell your architect at the start, because the staircase position affects the whole floor plan.
Mistakes to avoid
Making the steps steep to save space is the most common. A riser of 8 inches or more is tiring and risky for older family members.
Leaving uneven steps is the second, usually at the top or bottom where the finished floor level was not planned. Fix the floor finishes before the stair is cast.
Forgetting the headroom under a beam or the upper floor is the third. Check every step, not only the start of the flight.
What a staircase costs in Bangalore
In 2026, a new RCC dog-leg staircase in an independent house usually costs Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 4 lakh for the structure, depending on the floor height and width. Granite cladding costs about Rs 250 to Rs 500 per sq ft installed. Wooden treads cost more, about Rs 4,000 to Rs 10,000 per step.
Railings are priced separately, usually per running foot. A steel spiral staircase for terrace access costs about Rs 1 lakh to Rs 2.5 lakh.
