A bed is the one piece of furniture everyone uses every day, and in Indian apartments it often does a second job: storage. With wardrobes full and lofts hard to reach, the space under a king-size bed is one of the largest storage volumes in the home, around 30 cubic feet.
Choosing a bed is about more than how it looks in the showroom. It is about size, the mattress it supports, how it stores things, and how it fits the room so you can walk around it.
Here are bed designs that suit Indian bedrooms, with sizes, materials and costs.
Standard bed sizes in India
Indian mattress sizes differ slightly from international ones. The common sizes are:
- Single: about 36 by 72 or 36 by 75 inches.
- Queen: about 60 by 75 or 60 by 78 inches.
- King: about 72 by 75 or 72 by 78 inches.
The bed frame adds a few inches on each side and more for the headboard. A king-size bed with a headboard often takes 78 by 84 inches or more.
Leave at least 24 to 30 inches of clear space on each side of the bed and at the foot, more if a wardrobe door opens there. In a 12 by 12-foot bedroom, a queen bed often leaves more usable space than a king.
Storage bed designs
A hydraulic storage bed lifts the whole mattress platform on gas pistons, giving access to the entire space below. It holds the most and suits bulky items like suitcases, blankets and seasonal clothes. Choose good-quality pistons rated for your mattress weight; weak ones are the most common failure.
A box storage bed has lift-up lids in sections of the base. It costs less than a hydraulic bed, but you have to remove the mattress to reach some sections.
A drawer storage bed has drawers on one or both sides or at the foot. It suits items you use often, such as bed linen and clothes, but it needs clear floor space beside the bed to open the drawers.
A platform bed with open space below, on legs, stores nothing but makes a small room feel lighter and is easy to clean under.
Bed designs by style
A low platform bed with a simple wooden frame suits modern and Japanese-inspired bedrooms and makes a room feel larger.
An upholstered bed with a padded headboard is comfortable for reading in bed and suits master bedrooms.
A solid wood bed in teak or sheesham, with a carved or panelled headboard, suits traditional homes and lasts for decades.
A bed with an integrated headboard and side tables, built as one unit, saves space and keeps the bedside tidy.
A poster or canopy bed suits large master bedrooms in villas, with tall ceilings to carry it.
Bunk beds and children's beds
Bunk beds save floor space in shared children's rooms. Choose a sturdy frame with guard rails at least 5 inches above the mattress on the top bunk, and a fixed ladder rather than a loose one.
A trundle bed, with a second mattress on wheels that slides out from under the main bed, works well for occasional guests and sleepovers.
A loft bed with a study desk or storage below suits teenagers in small rooms.

Materials
Solid wood, such as teak, sheesham or sal, is the strongest and the most expensive. It suits beds that should last a generation.
Plywood with laminate or veneer is the most common material for built-in and storage beds. Use BWR or better plywood, 18 mm for structural parts, so the bed does not creak or sag.
Engineered wood, such as particle board, is used in budget flat-pack beds. It is fine for occasional use but weakens with moisture and repeated assembly.
Metal frames, in powder-coated steel, are strong and light, and suit minimalist and industrial styles.
Mattress and support
The bed base matters for the mattress. Slatted bases let the mattress breathe, which helps in humid months. Solid plywood bases need ventilation holes, especially on storage beds where the space below is closed.
Measure the mattress before ordering a custom bed. A bed built 2 inches too small or too large for a standard mattress is a costly mistake.
Beds in small Bangalore bedrooms
In second bedrooms of 10 by 10 feet, a queen bed against one wall, rather than in the centre of the room, frees up a walkway and space for a desk or a wardrobe with hinged doors. Keep one side of the bed at least 24 inches from the wall so it can be made easily.
A bed with a slim headboard, about 2 to 3 inches thick, saves more depth than a deep upholstered headboard. Wall-mounted bedside shelves instead of tables free up the floor beside the bed.
A daybed or a sofa-cum-bed suits study rooms and guest rooms that are used as bedrooms only occasionally.
What a bed costs in Bangalore
In 2026, a custom plywood bed with a laminate finish and box storage costs about Rs 30,000 to Rs 60,000 for a queen size and Rs 35,000 to Rs 75,000 for a king. A hydraulic storage bed costs about Rs 40,000 to Rs 90,000. An upholstered headboard adds Rs 15,000 to Rs 45,000.
A solid teak or sheesham bed costs from about Rs 70,000 to well over Rs 2 lakh depending on size and work. Mattresses are separate.
Mistakes to avoid
Buying the biggest bed that fits is the most common. A king bed that leaves 18 inches on each side makes the room hard to use.
Ignoring the wardrobe and door swings is the second. Check that every door can open fully with the bed in place.
Choosing cheap hydraulic fittings is the third. Weak pistons make the bed hard to lift and can drop suddenly.
