Almost every window in an Indian home has a grill, and most of them were chosen by the builder or a fabricator in a hurry. They are often the first thing that rusts, the first thing that makes a room look dated and, in a fire, a thing that can stop a family from getting out.
A good window grill keeps the home secure, keeps small children safe, lets in as much light and view as possible and lasts for decades without staining the wall below it. That takes a little more thought than picking a pattern from a fabricator's catalogue.
Here is how to choose window grills for a Bangalore flat or independent house.
Why the grill design matters
A grill sits in front of the window for the life of the house. Thick bars and busy patterns block light and view every day. A plain grill with thin bars at the right spacing lets the window do its job.
Grills also affect how the building looks from outside. In apartments the association often decides this. In independent houses the grills are part of the facade, so they should match the gate, the balcony railings and the window frames.
Types of window grills
Mild steel (MS) grills are the most common. They are strong and easy to make in any design. They need a proper primer and powder coating, or they rust and streak the wall below.
Stainless steel grills, in SS 304 grade, do not need painting and stay clean in humid weather. They cost more, and they look best in simple designs.
Aluminium grills are light and rust-free but less strong. They suit upper floors where security is less of a concern.
Invisible grills are stainless steel cables, 2 to 3 mm thick, strung vertically about 2 inches apart in a frame. From a few feet away they almost disappear. They are popular for balconies and windows in high-rise apartments, where the view matters and the main concern is child safety rather than break-ins.
Box grills project out from the wall and leave a small ledge for plants. They suit independent houses and ground-floor windows but collect dust and pigeon droppings.
Window grill design ideas
Plain vertical bars are the cleanest option and the safest for children, since vertical bars are hard to climb. Square or flat bars look more modern than round ones.
A grid of thin square sections gives a contemporary look and works with large sliding windows.
A geometric or laser-cut panel suits a feature window, such as a staircase window or a window facing the street, where you want some privacy as well as security.
A traditional design, with simple scrolls or a motif at the centre, suits older independent houses in areas like Basavanagudi or Malleshwaram, where it matches the house's character.
A grill that follows the window frame's divisions, with bars lining up with the window's mullions, looks neater than a pattern that ignores them.
Safety rules for window grills
Keep the gap between bars under 4 inches (100 mm), so a small child cannot squeeze through. On upper floors and balconies, avoid horizontal bars low down that a child can use as a ladder.
Fit at least one openable grill in every bedroom, with a lock that can be opened from inside without a key. In a fire, a fully fixed grill on every window can trap people inside. An openable grill is a small cost for that safety.
Anchor the grill into the wall or the concrete frame with proper fasteners, not just into the plaster.
Plan doors, stairs and the facade together.
Pigeons, monkeys and mosquitoes
Pigeons are a constant problem in Bangalore apartments, and grills with ledges give them somewhere to sit. Flat-topped grills and box grills attract them. A clear pigeon net behind or in front of the grill, or a grill without horizontal ledges, helps.
In some parts of the city close to green areas, monkeys get into homes through open windows. A grill with smaller gaps, combined with a mesh, keeps them out.
For mosquitoes, a fixed or sliding mesh shutter in the window frame works better than mesh fixed to the grill, which is hard to clean.
Finishes that last
Powder coating in a colour that matches the window frame is the most durable finish for MS grills. Black, dark grey and white are the most common and the easiest to match later.
On independent houses and lower floors exposed to rain, galvanise the steel before powder coating. Rust that starts at a weld spreads under the paint and stains the wall.
What window grills cost in Bangalore
In 2026, MS window grills with powder coating cost roughly Rs 180 to Rs 350 per sq ft depending on the design and the weight of the sections. SS 304 grills cost about Rs 450 to Rs 900 per sq ft. Invisible grills usually cost Rs 150 to Rs 300 per sq ft installed.
For a standard 4 by 4-foot window, that is about Rs 3,000 to Rs 5,600 in MS and Rs 7,000 to Rs 14,000 in stainless steel. Laser-cut panels and openable sections cost more.
Society rules for apartments
Many associations specify the grill design and colour for every flat, so the building looks uniform. Some do not allow grills on the outer face of balconies at all, and some allow only invisible grills. Check before ordering, and get any approval in writing.
